Pit Fired Pottery

The pit firing process creates more delicate and less controllable results than kiln firing. I fire the raw pots with mesquite sticks in a pit out in the beauty and wildness of the desert. I begin at sun rise for a long day of work. The weather plays an important role and is restrictive as to when I can and cannot fire. The short mid-winter days create a special need for a perfect, calm, warm and dry southern Arizona day. The pit firing ceremony requires patience with and reverence for the elements.
